Dear WRIToricians,

I could very easily tell you that since the Spring of 2006 the staff has been on strike, or that we lost our computer programmer, or that we were broke and had to live off rice and beans, or that we didn’t think you were ready for our awesomeness, which all sound believable.  But I’m not gonna to lie. The WRIToracle Staff was abducted by aliens and replaced with exact replicas.  IT’S TRUE!!!

Replicas that did not know proper usernames and passwords to get into our main control and administrative panels while we were away.  Well… all except that they did manage to get their hands on some top secret codes for our Forum (writing them on left-over pizza napkins is no longer a standard practice of ours…if you’re concerned).  If you went to the Forum during the previous fall, winter, and spring, you would have noticed all of the pornography.  Yes, it’s true; extraterrestrials loooove their earth-grown porn! We’ve had to deactivate the Forum since.

It wasn’t until April of 2007 that we were teleported back home, un-probed (thank god), naked, and furious to find that for a whole year the ETs wore our clothes but didn’t bother to do any laundry.  You can imagine the stench.  (For a pre-abduction recording of the last gathering of the staff, go to Michael Frissore’s Live at TheWRIT Summit, 2006, "Dirty Laundy" feature article.)

We would apologize to TheWRIT community, but we won’t.  Since we did nothing wrong; the apology wouldn’t be sincere.  Nonetheless, we do express sympathy to your loss.  I know you must have missed us.  We missed you too.

So, to Charles Simic, our Pulitzer-Prize winning Featured Writer of the Season, we do not apologize.  To Red Rabbit, our Featured Artists of the Season, we do not apologize.  To Dan Mangan, our Featured Singer / Songwriter of the Season… you guessed it, we bite our thumbs in your general direction.

However, since we know how depressed you must have been without us, we’ve decided to make the community some WRIT offers to hopefully make up for our absence.  Check out our “The Workshop” and "TheWRIT.org" sections in the Dialectical for more.

All in all, we’ve managed to leave the past in the past and hope you manage to do so also, and are working to redirect our energy toward picking up where we left off – a spring issue.  So here you have it folks, a year in the making, all the way from meteor storms a couple of light years from the Pluto formerly known as a planet, I present to you The WRIToracle Spring of 2007 issue. May the force be with you.

"Lighting A Match at Midnight"
Illuminating Charles Simic

by Michele Alexandra Filgate

The Voice At 3 A.M.

Who put canned laughter
Into my crucifixion scene?
-Charles Simic, Jackstraws

Charles Simic’s surrealistic poetry has made him one of the most famous and respected living poets in the world.  Insomnia, matches, the stub of a red pencil—nothing escapes the wide canyon of his immense imagination.  The Pulitzer-prize winner is one prolific poet.  With over sixty books to his name, he keeps busy between writing poetry and book reviews for internationally respected publications, teaching at the U...

From Art Kid to Art Mann
Jeremy Mann aka Red Rabbit

by caitlin anne flynn

What do the paintings This is Not a Peep Show and Caroline have in common?

With just a quick glance, one may be inclined to dismiss This is Not a Peep Show for its almost “childlike expression,” and what appears to be an all too obvious symbolism. Yet, it is not unusual to go back for that second look, then maybe a third, and then perhaps ponder about that symbolism, ultimately recognizing This is Not a Peep Show is an expression of ideas…“ideas conveying emotions through symbols.” Despite the seemingly cute symbols, this painting resounds with the macabre and forces you to think that there may be more here than t...

Mt. Major, New Hampshire, April 2006

We, that is - some of the WRIToracle
staff members, gathered to climb Mt. Major in Alton, NH. The wordplay in this being the first WRIT Summit and that we were climbing to the summit of this silly mountain was cute until the moment I realized – Holy crap, I actually have to climb this thing!

I had somehow gotten lost from the group. There was actually no “somehow” about it. I became winded and collapsed into a pile of mud while the rest of the WRIToricians continued up the moun...

Singer/Songwriter of the Season
Dan Mangan -

Dan Mangan

by courtney ann smith

A self-named songwriting “thief” who takes snippets of conversations and daily life to use in his simple yet intense lyrics, Dan Mangan has me wanting to thieve all his music; listening to it while writing inspires and motivates. His voice rings through clear and with a deep strength about it; it begs you to listen closer, to discern every word. The words could easily be read as poetry, their simple grace runs fluid through his melodies. Dan’s simple pleading and vivid images are truly addictive, and his music serves as a catchy backdrop to his songwriting artistry.

Always a music lover, Dan got his start as a piano student before moving onto guitar. After learning the quintessential Radiohead and Pearl Jam songs, he “just wanted to know what it was like to create a song out of nothing”. The “...
