The Union in Flight
Daniel Webster, descending the stairs -
his cat, who thinks he puts on airs -
stands poised to trip that awesome man
as part of some cat - considered plan.
Webster's composure comes adrift
his feet on the treads slide and shift;
imbalance, come to make him wise
shows him cats don't compromise.
The great man in flight, if falling counts
alights briefly, with a bounce
as papers scatter everywhere
and a man and his thoughts fill the air.
The cat, from neither north nor south
would smile if it had such a mouth
but instead disappears - there are ways
to clearly speak and still amaze.
